The Invisible Work: On Being Coached

Fam,

Week 2 of Hardrock training camp has successfully been completed under the guidance of Coach Hannah Allgood.

I wrote a newsletter a couple years ago when I first enlisted Hannah's services during perhaps the lowest moment of my athletic life. I treated myself terribly for several years and predictably my running ability fell off a cliff along with my motivation and enjoyment of the sport. Though I was perhaps the least reliable athlete in Coach Allgood's stable, she patiently tolerated my excuses with encouragement and positivity, consistently instructing me to be kinder to myself - something that does not come naturally.

One of my personal goals for 2026 was to reinvest in my health and fitness. Though I've been paying lip service to that goal for years, this year I'm actually proud of the progress I've made. While far from the volume and intensity I carried during my pro career, I've been consistently training for months and believe I'll be in good condition to finish another Hardrock in July with Hannah's help - something that wouldn't have been possible this time last year.

I've also been off the booze for the entirety of 2026 save for a couple celebratory evenings around our races and my 40th birthday. Frankly, I get really annoyed by the current trendiness of alcohol abstinence but have definitely - and unfortunately - noticed the benefit from eliminating the substance from my life, at least temporarily.

Another investment I've made in myself is enlisting a career coach to help me develop a better relationship with my work at Freetrail. Christian Rawles is a Canadian entrepreneur who turned to coaching after selling an outdoor apparel brand, which he founded and ran alongside his wife for 15 years. Like Hannah, he's a rally special person who's helped me a lot.

Christian and I had our coaching call on Friday - an experience that felt more like therapeutic brain surgery. A world-class listener, Christian has helped me reconnect with the truth of my career rather than the narrative that's lived in my head for years. He calls this process "The Invisible Work." Unsurprisingly, unwinding some of the baggage I've felt around Freetrail has opened more energy to apply to training and has been supremely beneficial to my mental/emotional health.

On Friday, we drilled down on a particular problem I've been wrestling with my whole life and that often shows up in my career. Christian encouraged me to find a totem that represents what I know to be true in my soul, independent of psychological narrative. Something I can keep around as a reminder when my inner dialogue becomes unkind. As he says, "the gap between what you know to be true and how you operate is where the work lives." The totem would be a reminder to shrink the gap.

As I was hiking up a hill at 12k' on Sunday, finishing my prescribed 4hr run from Hannah, I happened to look down at the ground and see a beautiful small piece of white marble, which I instinctively bent down and picked up. I'd found my totem.

The Invisible Work is ongoing. Thanks to Hannah and Christian for their support on the journey.

Love,

DBo

Patagonia Capilene® Cool Sun Hoody

Introducing Patagonia's fastest-wicking tech tee ever, with 40+ UPF knit right in.

The Capilene® Cool Sun Hoody recently became the most versatile and useful piece in my shred wardrobe. A true 12-month garment, it's kept me warm on cool spring mornings, and looking ahead towards summer in the alpine, it's the perfect option to stay cool and protected from intense UV exposure.

The Capilene® Cool Sun Hoody was the first thing I threw in my luggage when headed to Taos for my Hardrock camp. Sun protection, warp-speed wicking, and lightweight material make it the perfect all-arounder. In line with the Patagonia ethos - own fewer things and use them often.

Design features:

  • Buttoned hood closure
  • Thumbholes on the sleeve
  • Zippered pocket that doubles as a stuff sack

It's high-output breathability with UPF that won't wash out. This thing will live on my body or in my hydration vest all summer long.

+ Caleb Olson announced he'd left his job as a software engineer to pursue full time trail running. The 2025 Western States Champion seems to also be healthy after battling injury in the early part of the year. Still seemingly targeting UTMB, Caleb didn't announce where he might race in the lead up.

+ Rachel Entrekin has extended her partnership with Norda through 2029 according to a post from Singletrack. Could this be a Michael Jordan moment for one of running's most ascendant brands? We'll discuss tonight.

+ Hilary Yang posted the trailer for her forthcoming film "Raise the Bar" documenting the women's race at the 2025 Western States 100. The film will be screened at Memorial Day Training Camp in Auburn on May 24th. Free RSVP is available now.

+ SATISFY and adidas have announced a multi-season partnership that began with a viral activation in Arizona over the weekend centered around the limited-edition ADIZERO ADIOS PRO 4 SATISFY running shoe.

Bringing together adidas’ race-day performance innovation and SATISFY’s disruptive cultural perspective, the partnership pushes the boundaries of contemporary running culture.

+ Addie Bracy & Katie Asmuth left off where Rachel Entrekin and Sylie Abel left off - winning tough trail races OVERALL. Addie won the Ram Party 55 miler in Colorado while Katie Asmuth won the Bishop High Sierra 20 miler. What a year of women's trail racing!

+ iRunFar followed up amazing coverage of Transvulcania with more great content around Zegama. Make sure you read their results writeup and watch some of the post-race interviews!

+ Ledro Sky Trentino is the second stop of the Golden Trail World Series, happening this weekend in Italy. We're still awaiting the start lists and do intend to play Fantasy. Check back in later in the week to make your picks!
